These Canned Cinnamon Rolls with Apple Pie Filling and Brown Sugar Honey Glaze need just four ingredients and are sure to significantly improve your mornings!
These easy honey-glazed cinnamon buns are the best breakfast, a cozy fall treat, or the perfect dessert for your Rosh Hashanah dinner! If you love sweet apple treats, you'll love Apple Pop Tarts, Apple Cider Cupcakes, and Homemade Apple Cider Marshmallows.
Why this Recipe Works
On Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish new year, it is traditional to eat apples and honey to represent a sweet new year. It's also traditional to eat round foods to represent the cycle of the year. These traditions inspired these delicious Apples and Honey Cinnamon rolls - round, sweet, filled with apple pie goodness, and topped with a brown sugar honey glaze.
Ingredients and Notes
Canned Cinnamon Rolls - When selecting a can of Cinnamon Rolls, be sure the dough is rolled up, not sliced, so that you can unroll them. If using Pillsbury brand, be sure to use Grands.
Apple Pie Filling - A 21 ounce can should be enough to triple this apples and honey cinnamon roll recipe. To use the whole can, you'll want three cans of cinnamon rolls!
Substitutions
Canned Cinnamon Rolls - While this sweet spiced recipe calls for canned, homemade cinnamon roll dough will work for this delicious treat as well. You'll just add the apple pie filling before you roll them up!
Apple Pie Filling - This quick and easy recipe uses canned apple pie filling, but you could certainly use homemade if you prefer.
Brown Sugar - Instead of the frosting that comes with the canned cinnamon buns, these warm, gooey treats are topped with a brown sugar honey glaze. However, the brown sugar can be skipped and these apples and honey cinnamon rolls can be topped with just honey.
How to Make this Recipe
Step 1: Preheat the oven to 350° F. Unroll one cinnamon bun at a time.
Step 2: Roll a rolling pin over the dough to make the strip a bit wider.
Step 3: Line the inside of the dough with the apple pie filling (and replace any cinnamon filling that came off the dough).
Step 4: Roll the dough back up, making sure the dough is rolling overtop of the apple pie filling and is not pushing the apples out the sides.
Step 5: Place the cinnamon apple pie rolls in an ungreased pan, and bake 20 minutes or until golden brown.
Step 6: Combine honey and brown sugar, drizzle over warm cinnamon buns, and enjoy!
Recipe FAQs
Cinnamon rolls are a cinnamon-filled dough, rolled up and topped with icing. Sticky buns are similar but have a glaze instead of icing. Some people consider a cinnamon bun to be the same as a cinnamon roll, but others consider cinnamon buns to be sticky buns. Regardless of what you call them, they're all delicious!
If you don't eat these apple cinnamon buns while they are warm, they should be sealed well in an airtight container and can be stored at room temperature for a few days.
There are numerous reasons why apple is the fruit we dip in honey for the high holiday, but the general purpose of the apple dipped in honey is to represent sweetness for the year ahead.
Tips & Tricks
Tip #1: Some cinnamon filling will probably stick to the rolling pin. Use a butter knife or a clean or gloved finger to scrape the filling off the rolling pin and spread it back on to the unrolled dough. Some filling may also stick to the surface you're working on so be sure to spread that back on to the dough too!
Tip #2: When rolling the gooey apple filling into the cinnamon roll dough, keep your hands on the sides of the dough as you roll the dough overtop of the apple pieces to help keep the apples from slipping out of the sides.
Tip #3: These apples and honey cinnamon rolls are messy to make (if you have food handling gloves, I recommend using them!), but it cleans up very easily when you're done!
Storage Tips
These are best eaten immediately while still warm, but if leftovers need to be stored, they are best stored without the honey glaze in an airtight container at room temperature for a day or two.
