Chocolate Grits

Since I’m going to be traveling while you’re reading this, I thought I would share a story with you about my last trip.  Last month I went home to Louisville. While there my husband and I indulged in all the delicious food we missed now that we live in the northeast. It may surprise you, but Lonely Planet named Kentucky a top U.S. destination for 2018!

There are some foods that just can’t compare. Like grits. And as you may know, “no self-respectin’ Southerner uses instant grits.”  And if you don’t know that, stop what you’re doing and watch My Cousin Vinny right now.

Anyway, we of course bought some grits to bring back. Well, it turns out that you now have to take food out of your carry-on when going through airport security. So we took out the grits. The TSA  agent then began to share her suggestions on preparing grits.  One suggestion caught my attention: she adds cocoa powder and sugar to her grits to make a sweet treat.

I couldn’t wait to get home to try this out.  I’ve only ever had savory grits and the idea of sweet grits had never crossed my mind. Once I got the measurements down, I experimented with toppings and mix-ins such as nuts, berries, coconut, mini marshmallows, and more! This is such a fun and unique treat, and I can’t wait to try more sweet treat recipes with grits!

Chocolate Grits with Raspberries and Coconut
Instructions
  1. Prepare grits according to directions. The ones I used brings water to boil and stir in grits.
  2. Reduce head and cover, stirring occassionally, cooking 20-25 minutes or until done.
  3. Once done, remove from heat and stir in butter, salt, cocoa power, and sugar.
  4. Serve warm with desired toppings.
