THIS POST CONTAINS DOG PHOTOS! I thought that might get your attention. My dog, Gizmo, has a birthday coming up at the end of the month. I love to celebrate his birthday by spoiling him with special birthday treats, most often homemade cupcakes, which I like to refer to as pupcakes! There are so many different dog-friendly cupcakes (though always check with your vet before giving your dog people-foods) and my dogs like them all. This particular recipe is for Peanut Butter Pumpkin Sweet Potato Pupcakes.
My dogs love peanut butter, sweet potatoes, and pumpkin, so it was easy to pick the ingredients for this recipe. I want to be careful about not giving my dogs too much of anything that might not be great for them (again, please check with your vet) so I used whole wheat flour, 100% pure pumpkin, a real sweet potato that I pureed myself, and most importantly, I used peanut butter with one ingredient: peanuts.
I pureed the sweet potato in a food processor, but you can also probably buy baby food to get sweet potato that is already pureed. Also be sure that you’re getting real pumpkin, and not pumpkin pie filling. The peanut butter can be tricky. Peanut butters can have a lot of sugar, salt, artificial sugars, etc. I’m not comfortable giving my dogs foods with lots of sugar and salt so I used Teddie All Natural Smooth Unsalted. I love to use Teddie because it’s a local brand here in Massachusetts, but there are tons of peanut butters out there that only use peanuts.
This recipe only needs a bowl and a spoon, and can be ready from start to finish in 20 minutes. It’s always the right time to spoil your pups, and they will love these delicious Peanut Butter Pumpkin Sweet Potato Pupcakes which will be extra special because they’re made with love!
Do you celebrate your dogs’ birthdays? (Full disclosure: something always happens to remind me that Gizmo’s birthday is coming up, but my other furbaby, Baxter, somehow always has an overlooked birthday. But don’t worry, he’s still plenty spoiled!!)
