Raspberry Basil Hot Chocolate

Now if you’re hesitant about this flavor, I totally get it, but I’d also ask you to trust me.  This flavor was inspired by a dessert made on the Holiday Baking Championship.  The contestant made a raspberry basil dessert that sat on top of a chocolate brownie.  And the judges loved it!  I figure if the flavor combination worked for them, it would work for hot chocolate.

Heating basil in milk

When I was first writing this recipe, I wasn’t sure about buying raspberries in the winter, and hot chocolate isn’t exactly what you’re looking for in the summer.  Then I discovered canned raspberries.  I had no idea such a thing existed! But they make for the perfect flavor addition to hot chocolate.

Canned Raspberries

I’m honestly so surprised by how much I enjoyed this flavor combination. The raspberry flavor is not too overpowering, and there is just a hint of basil – enough to taste, but not too much!

Total Time5 mins
Servings: 1 mug

Ingredients

  • 1 cup milk
  • 1/2 cup basil
  • 1/2 cup dark chocolate
  • 1/2 cup canned raspberries and juice

Instructions

  • Place chocolate and raspberries with juice in a heatproof bowl (preferably with a spout), and set aside.
  • Combine milk and basil in a small saucepan and heat over medium-low heat, whisking frequently. (The faster you whisk, the foamier the milk will be.)
  • When the milk mixture looks like it's about to boil, remove from heat and pour through a strainer into bowl over the chocolate, catching the basil in the strainer.
  • Let sit about 1 minute, then whisk until completely smooth.
  • Pour into a blender and blend until smooth.
  • Pour into a mug and enjoy.
