Equipment

  • Rolling Pin
  • Baking sheet
  • Saucepan
  • Silicone spatula or wooden spoon

Ingredients

Apple Jam

  • 2 cups apple cider
  • 2 apples chopped
  • 3 cinnamon sticks
  • ¼ teaspoon nutmeg
  • ¼ teaspoon cloves

Pop Tarts

  • 1-2 tablespoons cornstarch
  • 2 roll-out pie crusts 1 box generally contains 2 crusts if using store-bought
  • 1 egg beaten

Icing Glaze

  • 1 ½ cups powdered sugar
  • 2-4 tablespoons apple cider
  • 1-3 tablespoon caramel sauce

Instructions

Apple Jam

  • Combine the apple jam ingredients in a saucepan and heat over medium heat.
  • During heating, stir occasionally, and when the apples are soft enough, use a potato masher (or a fork) to mash up the apples.
  • Continue heating until the mixture has reduced to a jam-like consistency. This will take about 45 minutes to an hour total.
  • Once reduced, remove from heat and let cool completely.

Poptarts

  • Defrost pie crust according to package directions.
  • Preheat oven to 400° F. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  • Mix the cooled apple jam with the cornstarch.
  • Roll out the pie crust into as close to a square as you can (cutting off a bit of the edges of the circle can help square it up, but it doesn't need to be perfect!).
  • Cut into 3 strips about 3" wide.
  • Spoon the jam onto one half of each strip, leaving the edges uncovered.
  • Brush the edges with egg, and then fold the strip in half so that the empty side of the strip folds over top of the jam.
  • Seal the edges with your fingers, and then press edges with a fork.
  • Brush the top of each poptart with egg and bake for 15-18 minutes.
  • Cool completely.

Icing Glaze

  • Combine all icing ingredients, adjusting the measurements as needed to get the flavor and consistency you're looking for. See notes below for tips about icing consistency.
  • Spoon the icing glaze over cooled poptarts.
  • Let the icing set, then enjoy!

Notes

The apple cider filling can be made the night before so it can be cooked and cooled before assembling and baking your apple pop tarts.
Store-bought pie crust will need to sit out at room temperature before unrolling, even if not frozen. Check the package for detailed directions.
Make the icing or glaze thicker than you think you'll want. The icing will run off the pop tarts as it sets resulting in a thinner coating than when you spoon the icing on. See Tips and Tricks above for more info.
