Fudge has always been one of my go-to treats for gifts. It's super easy to make, does not require any baking, and is always delicious! But anyone can gift chocolate fudge. So how about chocolate fudge that's a little more exciting? This Smoky Bourbon Chocolate Fudge is chocolate fudge with a kick of bourbon and a hint of smokiness. This recipe takes less than 10 minutes to prep, and a lot of patience while waiting for it to set!

Stack of 5 pieces of smoky bourbon chocolate fudge with the top piece with a bite taken out of it. In the back right of the frame is a pile of fudge.

    Why this recipe works

The bourbon flavor blends so nicely with the chocolate, and the smokiness is subtle, but adds a uniqueness that makes this fudge pleasantly surprising.

    Ingredients and notes

    Smoky Bourbon Chocolate Fudge ingredients

Bourbon - Bourbon is, of course, necessary for bourbon fudge. You can use a sweeter bourbon, or even a smoky bourbon to enhance the smokiness of this recipe. I'm biased toward Kentucky bourbon, but choose your favorite!

Liquid Smoke - Unfortunately, we can't smoke the fudge without it melting, so we have to artificially add the smokiness with Liquid Smoke. You should be able to find this at any grocery store. If you can't find Liquid Smoke, you can still make a delicious bourbon chocolate fudge without the smoky flavor.

Chocolate Chips - Semi-sweet or dark chocolate would be best for this chocolate fudge recipe. Milk chocolate would be very sweet. Chocolate chips are easy because they are evenly sized and should melt evenly. Baking chocolate will also work, it will just need to be chopped somewhat uniformly.

    How to make this recipe

    Fudge

    Step 1

Line an 8x8 pan with non-stick foil.

    Step 2

Combine chocolate chips and sweetened condensed milk in a medium saucepan and heat over low heat, stirring until the chocolate is melted and the mixture is smooth.

    Step 3

Remove from heat, and add bourbon, Liquid Smoke, and salt.

    Step 4

Pour into lined pan and refrigerate 2-4 hours, until the chocolate doesn't give when pressed lightly.

    Step 5

    Cut into cubes and enjoy!

    Recipe FAQs

How can you substitute bourbon in recipes?

In this chocolate bourbon fudge recipe, you can leave out the bourbon to make a smoky chocolate fudge. You can also use whiskey, or even vanilla extract, though I would reduce the measurement a bit if you use vanilla.

What's the secret to smooth fudge?

This chocolate bourbon fudge recipe uses sweetened condensed milk instead of sugar. Sugar can make fudge grainy, but the sweetened condensed milk sweetens the fudge without adding the graininess. For this chocolate fudge recipe, as long as your chocolate is fully melted, you will have a smooth fudge.

    Does bourbon fudge have alcohol?

Yes, there is a smidge of alcohol in this Smoky Bourbon Chocolate Fudge recipe. The bourbon is not cooked, but there is only one tablespoon in the entire batch. To make this recipe without alcohol, make a smoky chocolate fudge without the bourbon.

    Tips & Tricks

    • Remove the pot from the stove before the chips are completely melted. Continue stirring once removed from heat, and the hot mixture will continue to melt the remaining chips. This will also avoid over-heating the mixture.

    Hi, I'm Liz!

I started creating my own recipes when I realized that baking blogs usually shared complicated and time-consuming recipes that needed a lot of kitchen equipment and a lot of ingredients. When my grandma mentioned that I should write a cookbook, that inspired me to turn my super simple recipes into a blog. As much as I love to make these super simple recipes for my friends and family, I also love being able to share them with you!
