    Ingredients and Notes

Ingredients needed to make peach cobbler with cake mix.

Canned Peaches - This recipe uses three 15-oz cans of peaches in 100% juice. Be sure to drain the cans before dumping them into the baking dish to avoid a soggy cobbler.

These Peach Cupcakes are also made with canned peaches for year-round summer vibes!

Brown Sugar - Brown sugar is used in every layer of this simple homemade peach cobbler. We add it to the peaches directly for an added depth of flavor, we add it to the cake mix to give it a little extra sweetness, and we top the cobbler with it to give the crust the perfect crunch!

Boxed Cake Mix - This tasty treat uses a 15.25 oz box of store-bought boxed cake mix for the topping, keeping the recipe as simple as possible. Different brands of cake mix come in slightly different sizes, but they're usually close enough to work fine in this recipe. Do not prepare the cake batter in accordance with the instructions on the box. We are simply using the dry cake mix as an ingredient.

See the recipe card below for full information on ingredients.

    Substitutions & Variations

Canned Peaches - You can use peaches in syrup or peach pie filling, but you may need to reduce the brown sugar a bit to account for the added sweetness from the syrup. I would suggest doing this reduction from the layer that goes directly on top of the peaches. Removing the brown sugar from the other layers will also reduce the crispness of the topping.

Boxed Cake Mix - I used yellow cake mix here, but white cake mix works great too! A spice cake mix can also add cozy fall vibes to this easy Peach Cobbler.

Spices - Feel free to play with the flavor of this Peach Cobbler by sprinkling spices over the canned peaches, such as 1-2 teaspoons of cinnamon. A bit of nutmeg also adds a cozy and delicious touch of flavor.

How to Make Cake Mix Peach Cobbler with Canned Peaches

Find the complete recipe with measurements in the recipe card below.

    1. Step 1: Dump drained peaches into 9x13 baking dish.

    1. Step 2: Drizzle vanilla over peaches and sprinkle ¼ cup brown sugar over top.
A silver bowl with a crumbly cake mix topping.
    1. Step 3: Combine dry cake mix, ¼ cup brown sugar, and melted butter until it resembles a clumpy, dry batter.
The crumble cake mix mixture covering the peaches in a 9x13 glass baking dish.
    1. Step 4: Crumble the cake mixture over the peaches.
Brown sugar covering the top of the peach cobbler in the 9x13 glass baking dish.
    1. Step 5: Sprinkle the remaining brown sugar on top.
Baked peach cobbler in a 9x13 glass baking dish.
    1. Step 6: Bake at 350°F for 45-50 minutes, until browned and bubbly. Let cool at least 15 minutes and enjoy warm!

Peach Cobbler with Cake Mix Tips & Tricks

Tip #1: Use a fork to combine the yellow cake mix, melted butter, and brown sugar. It helps break up any big clumps into smaller pieces, allowing for more even distribution over the top of the cobbler.

Tip #2: Aside from combining the dry cake mix, butter, and brown sugar in a separate bowl, nothing in this Peach Cobbler with Canned Peaches should be mixed. Everything is dumped in layers into the baking dish, but is not stirred or combined. This helps to keep the topping crisp.

Tip #3: The cake mix Peach Cobbler will be very hot when it's first removed from the oven. Be sure to let it cool for at least 15 minutes. The peaches will remain quite hot, so use caution!

Tip #4: This Peach Cobbler with Canned Peaches and Cake Mix is best served warm, but is delicious at room temperature as well. If serving after a meal, it's perfect to put in the oven before sitting down to eat, and it will be ready to serve in an hour!

    Recipe FAQs

How should I serve Peach Cobbler with Canned Peaches and Cake Mix?

This quick and easy southern treat is best served warm. It's delicious on its own, or served with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or a dollop of whipped cream (or both)!

Do peaches need to be soft for cobbler?

When baking with fresh fruit, you usually want to use riper fruit because it's sweeter, so softer fruit is generally preferred when using fresh fruit. We keep this recipe extra easy by using canned peaches so ripeness and softness will not matter. Plus, canned peaches let us enjoy this simple summer treat year-round!

What's the difference between a cobbler and a crisp?

Cobblers usually have a dough-based topping. Crisps tend to have an oat-based topping. Both are crunchy and delicious!

How should I store leftover Cake Mix Peach Cobbler?

We rarely have any leftovers in my home! But if you do have leftovers, they should be stored covered in the refrigerator for 3-4 days. Leftovers can be enjoyed cold, at room temperature, or reheated in the oven or microwave.

Can I double this Peach Cobbler with Canned Peaches and Cake Mix recipe?

I would not suggest doubling this recipe. If you need more than one batch, I would make each batch individually in its own 9x13 baking dish.

Two plates with peach cobbler on them, one of which is going out of frame.

Using a fork to combine the cake mix, butter, and brown sugar helps break up clumps.
Except for creating the cake batter topping, nothing should be stirred. Everything is just layered in the baking dish and baked in layers.
Be sure to cool the cobbler for at least 15 minutes before eating. The peaches will be very hot, even after cooling.

Hi Cee! I would still drain them so that the cobbler isn't runny with too much liquid. You may also want to reduce the brown sugar since peach pie fillings usually are sweeter than canned peaches, but you can adjust to taste!

Super easy to make but I couldn't taste the peaches. Maybe it would be better with fresh peaches, but they aren't in season here in Spokane.

Hi Dave, I'm sorry you weren't able to taste the peaches! It could be the brand of peaches used, some may be more flavorful than others. You could also cut back on the brown sugar and/or vanilla to make the peach flavor more prominent.

Flavor wise, it was fantastic! Also very simple. I did not use the 1/2 brown sugar on top of everything and it was plenty sweet. Also, it would be helpful if the author changed the “1 stick of butter” to the actual measurements. My butter comes in 4 Tbsp, and I googled it and others come in 8 Tbsp.

I'm so glad you liked it Cristina! I like the brown sugar on top for a bit of a crunchy texture, but definitely works to skip it too! Thank you for the tip about the butter as well, that's really helpful to know and I will work on making this update. So happy you enjoyed!!

I doubled the vanilla in the peaches and added cinnamon on the peaches and topping. I did t have ice cream so I topped it with cool whip (much to my husband's horror lol)
The crumble has a wonderful crunch and the peaches are soft and supple. Definitely going in my rotation for desserts ❤️❤️

Hi Betty, I'm so glad you like it! I have not tested it with frozen peaches, but the juice from the canned peaches is drained before adding them to the baking dish so it should be fine that they don't have juice. If you try it out, I'd love to hear how it goes!
