    Why this Recipe Works

Rice Krispie Treats are the best no-bake treat! Adding Nutella takes these nostalgic treats to another level by adding chocolate hazelnut deliciousness.

    Ingredients and Notes

Ingredients needed to make Nutella Rice Krispie Treats.

Rice Krispies - This recipe uses half of a 9 oz box of Rice Krispies so you can get two batches out of each box of cereal.

Marshmallows - Make sure that you are using fresh marshmallows. If you purchased them awhile ago, they may not melt as well.

Salt - The salt helps balance out the sweetness of these chocolate hazelnut treats.

    Substitutions and Variations

Marshmallows - This recipe uses one 12 oz bag of marshmallows. For mini marshmallows, you'll need 6 cups. Because mini marshmallows generally come in a 10 oz bag you will need a little bit more than one bag.

Toppings - For a little extra Nutella goodness, you can drizzle melted chocolate or additional Nutella on top of the cereal bars. Heat the Nutella slightly to thin it before drizzling. If you drizzle with Nutella or melted chocolate, you can also add sprinkles for a pop of color. This can also make the Rice Krispie Treats fit a holiday. Christmas sprinkles can make these a super easy holiday gift! A little extra sprinkle of sea salt over the drizzle can also add a bit of a salty sweet flavor.

    How to Make this Recipe

Marshmallows and butter in a silver stainless steel saucepan.

Step 1: Melt butter and marshmallows over medium low heat.

Step 2: When almost completely melted, but still a bit lumpy, add the Nutella and mix until fully incorporated then remove from heat.

Step 3: Place Rice Krispies in a large mixing bowl and pour the Nutella marshmallow mixture over top. Add salt and stir until the cereal is fully covered.

Step 4: Press into a lined 9x13 pan and let set. Then cut into square and enjoy!

    Recipe FAQs

What's the best way to melt the marshmallows?

I melt the marshmallows in a saucepan over medium-low heat. They can also be melted in the microwave for 45 seconds, then stirring and continuing to heat in 15 second increments stirring between each.

How do I make Rice Krispie Treats more decorative or themed?

Drizzle the cereal bars with melted chocolate or thinned Nutella and top with sprinkles for a theme. Christmas sprinkles or Halloween sprinkles can make these perfect for your holiday parties. Add pastel sprinkles before adding these to an Easter basket. Or just add any of your favorite sprinkles for a pop of color!

What's the ideal size for cutting Nutella Rice Krispie Treats?

There is no right or wrong size for cutting these chocolate hazelnut cereal bars! I usually cut 20 bars out of a 9x13 pan, but feel free to cut them bigger if that excites you or smaller to get more treats out of each batch.

    Tips & Tricks

Tip #1: When pressing the Rice Krispies mixture into the pan, press lightly. These are already slightly denser than typical Rice Krispie treats because of the Nutella, so pressing them in too tightly will make them even denser. If you press them in more loosely it will keep them lighter and chewier.

Tip #2: Make sure your mixing bowl is big enough for the Rice Krispies and the Nutella marshmallow mixture with extra room to stir well. The bigger the bowl, the better so that the cereal doesn't fly out of the bowl!

Tip #3: For thicker Nutella Rice Krispie Treats, use an 8x8 pan instead of a 9x13. If you do this, they will be very thick. You can also make this in two 8x8 pans for similar thickness.

    Storage Tips

Nutella Rice Krispie Treats can be stored in an airtight container at room temperature for a week.

    Equipment

    • 9x13 baking pan
    • large mixing bowl
    • medium saucepan

    Ingredients

    • 5 cups Rice Krispies
    • 1 stick butter
    • 12 oz bag marshmallows
    • 1 cup Nutella
    • 1 teaspoon kosher salt Diamond Crystal

    Instructions

    • Line a 9x13 pan with wax paper or non-stick foil.
    • Place Rice Krispies in a large mixing bowl and set aside.
    • Combine marshmallows and butter in a medium saucepan over medium low heat until mostly, melted, but still a bit lumpy.
    • Add in Nutella and continue stirring until smooth.
    • Pour over Rice Krispies, add salt, and stir until the cereal is well coated.
    • Spread evenly into lined pan and let set, then cut into squares and enjoy!

    Notes

You'll need a large mixing bowl to ensure there is enough room to stir the cereal and Nutella marshmallow mixture together.
When pressing the treats into the pan, press lightly. If they're pressed in tightly it will result in denser cereal bars.
This recipe can be made in two 8x8 pans, or one 8x8 pan for extra thick Rice Krispie Treats.

    Hi, I'm Liz!

I started creating my own recipes when I realized that baking blogs usually shared complicated and time-consuming recipes that needed a lot of kitchen equipment and a lot of ingredients. When my grandma mentioned that I should write a cookbook, that inspired me to turn my super simple recipes into a blog. As much as I love to make these super simple recipes for my friends and family, I also love being able to share them with you!
