    Why this Recipe Works

The creamy texture of the Nutella combined with the chocolate hazelnut flavor creates an elevated chocolate cupcake. The chocolate hazelnut spread adds a depth of flavor to a rich and moist chocolate cupcake, making this a dreamy and delicious dessert!

    Ingredients and Notes

Ingredients needed to make Nutella cupcakes.

Nutella - Nutella is the only source of chocolate in these homemade cupcakes. They're made without cocoa powder allowing the flavor of Nutella to really shine!

Baking Soda and Baking Powder - This Nutella Cupcakes recipe uses a combination of baking soda and baking powder giving a really good rise to the cupcakes.

    Substitutions

Milk - Cream or half and half can be used in place of the milk in these easy chocolate hazelnut cupcakes. Non-dairy milk will also work great, but just be aware of any flavor it might add.

Nutella Buttercream Frosting - For a lighter topping, try using easy two-ingredient Nutella Whipped Cream instead. This Strawberry Buttercream Frosting will also provide a nice contrast of flavor with the rich, chocolate cupcake.

    How to Make this Recipe

Egg, Nutella, and milk in a clear glass mixing bowl.

Step 1: Combine the Nutella, egg, and milk.

Dry ingredients added to the Nutella mixture in the clear glass mixing bowl.

Step 2: Add the remaining ingredients and mix until combined.

Nutella cupcake batter in a muffin tin lined with 8 paper cupcake liners.

Step 3: Divide among 6-8 cupcake liners and bake at 350°F for 20 minutes. Cool in the pan for 5 minutes, then move to a wire rack to cool completely.

Step 4: For the frosting, beat the butter until smooth, then add the remaining ingredients and beat until desired consistency. Pipe or spread onto cooled cupcakes and enjoy!

    Recipe FAQs

How do you fill a cupcake?

If you want to fill these Nutella cupcakes with extra Nutella spread, there are a few ways to core a cupcake. One is to use a cupcake corer, which is a tool that is made to remove the center of a cupcake. In place of that, you can also use a small round cookie cutter or even just a knife to cut out the center of the cupcake. Be sure to not cut all the way to the bottom of the cupcake. You want to leave some cake on the bottom to hold the filling in!

Can this be made into a Nutella cake?

Because this decadent recipe makes a small batch of cupcakes, it will not be enough to make a full cake. You should be able to double the recipe for each layer of the cake for an 8" or 9" round cake. Quadrupling the recipe should work perfectly for a two layer cake. Note that bake time will need to be adjusted for a cake.

How do I get a domed top on my cupcakes?

The combination of baking soda and baking powder in these Nutella Cupcakes gives these rich and decadent cupcakes a perfectly domed top!

    Tips & Tricks

Tip #1: Before lining the cupcake pan with paper liners, sprinkle a few grains of rice into the bottom of each muffin cup, then place the paper liner on top of the rice. This keeps the bottom of your cupcakes from getting greasy and also makes them extra easy to remove from the pan.

Tip #2: These cupcakes are already bursting with Nutella flavor, but for extra Nutella goodness, consider filling the cupcakes with more Nutella. This will call for about 2 additional tablespoons of Nutella in the recipe, and a teaspoon of filling will go into each cupcake.

Tip #3: For a thicker frosting, add additional powdered sugar. For thinner frosting, add additional milk.

Tip #4: This recipe can be doubled for a dozen cupcakes.

    Storage Tips

Store Nutella Cupcakes in an airtight container at room temperature for 3-5 days.

    Hi, I'm Liz!

I started creating my own recipes when I realized that baking blogs usually shared complicated and time-consuming recipes that needed a lot of kitchen equipment and a lot of ingredients. When my grandma mentioned that I should write a cookbook, that inspired me to turn my super simple recipes into a blog. As much as I love to make these super simple recipes for my friends and family, I also love being able to share them with you!
