Chocolate hummus is so delicious, but store-bought dessert hummus can get pricey, and making a sweet flavored hummus from scratch takes so much less time and effort than going to the store. Plus homemade dessert hummus means the flavor options are endless! This super-simple 5-minute, 5-ingredient Nutella Hummus recipe takes chocolate hummus to the next level!

    Why this recipe works

Chickpeas (also known as garbanzo beans) have a fairly neutral flavor so they make a perfect base for flavor creativity. They also balance out the sweetness of the Nutella very nicely, taking on the flavor of the chocolate hazelnut spread, but not being overpowered by it. This is likely why there is such a variety of incredible hummus flavors, both savory and sweet.

    Ingredients and notes

Chickpeas/Garbanzo Beans - This chocolate hummus recipe calls for canned chickpeas, also known as garbanzo beans. If you instead go with dried chickpeas, they will need to be properly prepared before beginning this dessert hummus recipe. The canned chickpeas will need to be drained before adding them to the other Nutela Hummus ingredients, but don't toss the liquid from the can - the liquid is known as aquafaba and makes an incredible vegan egg white substitute!

Nutella - This chocolate hazelnut spread is, of course, what makes this Nutella Hummus recipe different from other versions of chocolate hummus. Because the Nutella provides a texture similar to tahini, this chocolate hummus recipe does not call for tahini.

Coconut Oil - This Nutella Hummus recipe calls for coconut oil because it has its own sweetness to it. The coconut flavor is not noticeable in this easy chocolate recipe, but also does not distract from the delicious Nutella flavor.

    How to make this recipe

Simply combine all the ingredients in a food processor and blend until smooth!

    Recipe FAQs

What can I dip in chocolate hummus?

I love this question because the variety of options is infinite! Sweeter items like fruit or cookies are delicious, as are more neutral pairings like graham crackers, animal crackers, Nilla wafers, or even pita bread. My personal favorites are saltier options like pretzels, buttery crackers, or saltines.

How long is dessert hummus good for?

This Nutella hummus should last for close to a week in an airtight container, but I'd be shocked if the entire batch of this delicious dip isn't gone long before then!

    Tips & Tricks

    • If you don't have a food processor, a blender should work great!
    • Be sure to save the liquid drained from the canned chickpeas (known as aquafaba) to use as an egg white substitute in other recipes!
